A bright Winter afternoon, skaters weaving graceful patterns on a frozen pond or river,  in changing configurations. In the middle, a not very skillful soloist takes center stage with a rather awkward flute solo, ending in a sort of curtsy (which looks ahead to theme of the final movement, Late February). The piece is as much about the elements as the skaters, with the sun at times going behind the clouds; and the general feeling being conveyed is the exhilaration of being outside on a cold but beautiful Winter day.
